Chiron, in Greek mythology, was a centaur who was born to Titan Cronus and Philyra, a sea nymph. Being half-man and half-horse, Chiron was abandoned by his mother immediately after he was born. Her mother felt disgust and shame at the child she had birthed.
Centaurs were often known for yielding to their wild, instinctual nature. They were the lawless creatures seen as a contrast to the civilised Greek society. The exception lay in Chiron.
Chiron was then raised by his foster-father Apollo who taught him the art of healing and many other arts. Chiron, the wise centaur, took keen interest in the art of medicine, herbs, healing, music, gymnastics, prophecy, etc. Apollo’s sister, Artemis, taught him the art of archery and hunting.
Chiron grew up to become a mentor and a wise teacher to many Greek heroes such as Achilles. One of his disciples was Heracles. Heracles once accidentally struck Chiron with an arrow poisoned with the blood of the Hydra. Chiron didn’t hold any resentment against Heracles. Instead he smilingly saw the incident as a turn of fate. He tried healing the wound, so did others. None could succeed in healing it. Chiron was blessed with the boon of immortality and by virtue of this, the wound became a festering curse for him.
Meanwhile Prometheus, the creator of humans , was imprisoned by Zeus for bringing the gift of fire to humans. An eagle was put in charge to devour the liver of Prometheus every single day and each day, it would restore itself. Chiron now showed the ultimate sacrifice of giving up his immortality for the freedom of Prometheus. This was accepted. In this manner the wise centaur found peace.
